Early Indiana Trails and Surveys (Classic Reprint)
By:George R. Wilson
Published on 2016-09-09 by Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Early Indiana Trails and Surveys Indian road at what is now Gosport and one between Cataract and Santa Fe. Ten miles east of Bloomington he crossed an Indian trail running north and south.5 South of White river, near Brownstown, he recorded another Indian road, going east and west; west perhaps to the old Delaware camp at the forks of White river. There was an army crossing at the mouth of Raccoon creek 7 the trail crossed the Wabash there and followed up the right hand or west bank of the river. This fact made the mouth of Raccoon creek prominent enough to be a beginning point of the Harrison Purchase,8 in 1809. On this ten o'clock line there was an Indian trail between what is now Dana and Hillsdale.9 Since the line ran in a southeasterly direction, the traces must have crossed it nearly at right angles, or the surveyor would not have recorded them. Probably all led toward Ft. Wayne and Vincennes.10 The survey of this line was not pleasing to Tecumseh, and he so intimated to the United States government, August 10, 1810, at Vincennes.11 He was very angry at the chiefs who touched the quill, as the Indians called signing a treaty. Read Twentieth Century Classics now online

Twentieth Century Classics
By:Rajiva Wijesinha
Published on 2013-03-21 by Cambridge University Press

Twentieth Century Classics is a collection of essays on 20th-century English society through surveys of leading prose writers of that period. In this book the author, Rajiva Wijesinha, puts together 51 writers of English literature whose works have the best claim towards the hallmark of 'classic' in the 20th century. Each of the writers included in this book is representative of the period in terms of his or her literary concerns and choice of themes and subjects. Initially published in Sri Lanka in the newspaper, The Island, as a weekly column, the essays also contribute much to our understanding of the society they describe, the changes the society experienced and the moral perspectives that governed it. The essays are educational and written in a lucid manner. They can be a reader's best guide to good literature of the previous century.

Read The Universal Christ now online

The Universal Christ
By:Richard Rohr
Published on 2019-03-05 by Convergent Books

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From one of the world’s most influential spiritual thinkers, a long-awaited book exploring what it means that Jesus was called “Christ,” and how this forgotten truth can restore hope and meaning to our lives. “Anyone who strives to put their faith into action will find encouragement and inspiration in the pages of this book.”—Melinda Gates In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Is the word simply Jesus’s last name? Too often, Rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center. Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator’s presence all around us, and in everyone we meet. Thought-provoking, practical, and full of deep hope and vision, The Universal Christ is a landmark book from one of our most beloved spiritual writers, and an invitation to contemplate how God liberates and loves all that is.

Read The Christian Imagination now online

The Christian Imagination
By:Willie James Jennings
Published on 2010-05-25 by Yale University Press

Why has Christianity, a religion premised upon neighborly love, failed in its attempts to heal social divisions? In this ambitious and wide-ranging work, Willie James Jennings delves deep into the late medieval soil in which the modern Christian imagination grew, to reveal how Christianity's highly refined process of socialization has inadvertently created and maintained segregated societies. A probing study of the cultural fragmentation-social, spatial, and racial-that took root in the Western mind, this book shows how Christianity has consistently forged Christian nations rather than encouraging genuine communion between disparate groups and individuals. Weaving together the stories of Zurara, the royal chronicler of Prince Henry, the Jesuit theologian Jose de Acosta, the famed Anglican Bishop John William Colenso, and the former slave writer Olaudah Equiano, Jennings narrates a tale of loss, forgetfulness, and missed opportunities for the transformation of Christian communities. Touching on issues of slavery, geography, Native American history, Jewish-Christian relations, literacy, and translation, he brilliantly exposes how the loss of land and the supersessionist ideas behind the Christian missionary movement are both deeply implicated in the invention of race. Using his bold, creative, and courageous critique to imagine a truly cosmopolitan citizenship that transcends geopolitical, nationalist, ethnic, and racial boundaries, Jennings charts, with great vision, new ways of imagining ourselves, our communities, and the landscapes we inhabit.

Read Christian Discourses now online

Christian Discourses
By:Søren Kierkegaard,Howard Vincent Hong,Edna Hatlestad Hong
Published on 1997 by Princeton University Press

First published in 1848, Christian Discourses is a quartet of pieces written and arranged in contrasting styles. Parts One and Three, |The Cares of the Pagans| and |Thoughts That Wound from Behind--for Upbuilding,| serve as a polemical overture to Kierkegaard's collision with the established order of Christendom. Yet Parts Two and Four, |Joyful Notes in the Strife of Suffering| and |Discourses at the Communion on Fridays,| are reassuring affirmations of the joy and blessedness of Christian life in a world of adversity and suffering. Written in ordinary language, the work combines simplicity and inwardness with reflection and presents crucial Christian concepts and presuppositions with unusual clarity. Kierkegaard continued in the pattern that he began with his first pseudonymous esthetic work, Either/Or, by pairing Christian Discourses with The Crisis, an unsigned esthetic essay on contemporary Danish actress Joanne Luise Heiberg.
